Ferris Buehler's House - Sale Pending

Well, this one is off the market. Ferris Buehler's famous house where Cameron killed the car sold under list price for  $1.06 M which is only slightly over the  average sales price for a not-famous-at-all median value Cupertino home these days. Location, location....

Chicks become Hens

Remember the cute chickie baby pics I posted about 3 months ago? Well the chicks grew into teenage hens in the meantime. Above you see Elsa, our blue feathered Ameraucana, also called Easter-Egger because they lay colored eggs. Below you have all three: Elsa the Ameraucana, Cinderella the Rhode Island Red who will lay brown eggs, and Snow-White, the fat and feisty leghorn who wasn't feisty and fat at all after she injured her leg, only a few days old. We had to take her out of the brooder in a separate box so that the other two won't be able to pick and step on her. Her leg healed and she became the biggest hen of all three. She also won the pecking order against the Ameraucana. All three are buddies again after we set them out in the chicken coop. The leghorn follows me and is not afraid at all because she is used to me picking her up when she was hurt. In a few more months they will start laying eggs. Gilroy allows to have up to six chickens in the backyard per city ordinance. We keep the limit at three so that they have room in their coop.

RSVP - Help a Senior Day Today

Our happy senior after we harvested 6 bags of oranges, groomed the front yard, and cleaned the oven. It was a great day of community service! I had fun and a good work out crawling up the orange tree.

With pride I am wearing this shirt today given by the realtor service volunteer program of the @ Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS®. Together with my colleagues I will help seniors with garden and house chores today in Silicon Valley. "My senior" actually lives in my old bachelorette neighborhood of Saratoga Avenue - nice surprise! I haven't been there since I moved to Gilroy into my husband's home. I remember the best Philly Cheese Steaks there at Armato's.

Speaking from food, I am as of now 10 hrs without food and no Cinco margarita either. The big Kahuna called yesterday and asked me to get my overdue fasting lab done today. The Easter glucose spike has not quite subsided yet, but I run out of excuses. So it be. A little exercise before the lab hopefully will do it.

Bread and Roses

May Day May Day! I wish everyone a happy one. It's going to be sunny and hot here in Silly Icon Valley. To my Hawaiian friends I wish them a happy Lei Day. Hawaiians are wearing leis to work today - makes me want to be there. Anyway, in honor of May Day, here is a beautiful poem from James Oppenheim which I love. I have my problems with unions of today but also recognize their historic role in the liberation of struggling women. I would have marched with them, then.
May 1 is a day to remember that.

BREAD and ROSES

As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: "Bread and roses! Bread and roses!"
As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women's children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for -- but we fight for roses, too!

As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler -- ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!
